Lisa Briese, Quilt Designer and owner of Lou Lou & Betty

MEET THE DESIGNER

HI THERE, I’M LISA

It was after an international move from Colorado Springs back home to Newcastle, Australia and during Covid lockdowns in 2020, that I was left pondering what to do next. I had not worked since having the kids and while living in the US I had learnt to quilt and loved it. An idea began to emerge, and combined with my desire to turn my quilting hobby into something more, I embarked on the journey that has become Lou Lou & Betty.

How did I become a quilt designer? During a Covid lockdown I discovered that a local adult education centre was offering free courses. So I enrolled in two courses, Emarketing for Small Business and Build & Launch a Small Business Website. Once I’d completed these courses I embarked on a Quilt Pattern Writing course. From there I set about writing my first quilt pattern and discovered there’s a ton more to pattern writing than first thought. It has been a journey and so much to learn, but I have challenged myself to continue and keep my dream alive.

Lou Lou & Betty is a culmination of my love of quilting, designing, and sharing my quilting knowledge. My modern quilt patterns are thoughtfully written so you can make your quilt with ease. I have covered all techniques in my patterns with in-depth tutorials on the blog, along with plenty of inspiration. My patterns are thoroughly checked, with patterns testers making the quilt and my husband Stuart doing the final tech editing (he has a background in professional writing and editing of documents). Enjoy your quilt making journey and know you are supported, with accessible content from start to finish.

BEHIND THE NAME

WHY LOU LOU & BETTY?

My carefree days and adventures growing up on a farm in rural NSW are among my favourite memories. This is also where my interest in sewing began and my love of animals.

When it was lambing season one year, my sister and I convinced our parents to let us have a pet lamb each. These pet lambs became affectionately known as ‘Lou Lou’ and ‘Betty’. While our family loved Lou Lou and Betty, they eventually were returned to live happily with their flock.

When I find time, I treasure the carefree moments where I can indulge in quilt making.

‘Lou Lou’ all grown up!
